Women & Inclusion in Supramolecular Chemistry

Dr Nawal El Hakawati
Assistant Professor - Beirut Arab University, Lebanon
Dr. Nawal El Hakawati is a Lebanese academic and researcher specialized in Physical Biochemistry. She currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Science at Beirut Arab University (BAU) in Lebanon, where she teaches and coordinates various courses including Instrumental Analysis, Bioorganic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry and Physical Chemistry. Dr. Hakawati is also a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Surrey in the UK, within the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. She earned her PhD from the University of Surrey in 2017. Her doctoral work focused on the physico-chemical characterization of synthesized calix-macrocycles and their analytical and biological applications.
Her interdisciplinary research primarily explores Supramolecular Chemistry and Environmental Technology. Key areas of her work include: Sensing and Capture: Designing chromogenic chemosensors to detect and capture carbon dioxide. Water Remediation: Developing methods for pharmaceutical remediation from water using macrocyclic ligands.
Ion Detection: Fabricating ion-selective electrodes for monitoring various cations and anions.
Her goal as a Lebanese academic is to cultivate a learning atmosphere that promotes curiosity, resilience, and determination qualities that she believes are essential for success in modern scientific research. She firmly believes that students deserve equal access to opportunities, exposure, and high-quality scientific training. Her efforts have been dedicated to bridging this gap by bringing research experiences, external collaborations, and advanced scientific practices directly to them
